When he takes a moment to breathe, Regan is staring at him. SHe hasn't even had a chance to grab her notebook, because he's just been talking, and she can't hear him, and she can't read his lips, but it feels rude to look away: in Deaf culture, looking away is as effective as a Hearing person covering their ears during a conversation.

It's easy to see the affect the dog has on the boy, though. She can see the pressure that it applies to the boy's leg, and can't help but smile. Regan holds up a hand to encourage him to wait, and pulls out her phone.

After a moment of typing, she turns the screen to face him.

I didn't catch any of that. I'm deaf.
